Open Forum on ILSB Public Art Installation
Dear Members of the UMBC Community,
UMBC, in partnership with the Maryland State Arts Council, will be hosting an open forum with artist Volkan Alkanoglu, the finalist selected to create the public art installation for the Interdisciplinary Life Sciences Building (ILSB), on Wednesday, October 4, 12-1 p.m. in PAHB Room 132.
During the discussion, participants will learn about the Maryland Public Art Program, meet the artist, and share their thoughts on who we are as a community and how that might be reflected in the artwork. It is envisioned the artwork will echo the spirit of scientific curiosity, collaboration, and inquiry and will embody the inclusive excellence and intellectual rigor of the UMBC community.
An artist and architect, Volkan Alkanoglu has been awarded commissions for the creation and installation of public art in civic and university spaces nationally and internationally. His portfolio includes public art, as well as building, interior, and furniture design. Alkanoglu is currently teaching at Harvard University Graduate School of Design.
I would also like to express my gratitude for the hard work and commitment of all members of the Art Installation Planning Committee for their support and guidance in the selection process.
Lynne Schaefer, Vice President for Administration and Finance
